DIY Mother's Day High Tea at Home

Mother (n): A person who does all the work of many for free. Its the one day of the year when we cater to the person that caters to everyone else every day of the year.

Since we are just a few days away from Mothers Day, and many restaurants are closed due to Covid restrictions, I thought I would share some of my favourite ways to set up a simple tea/brunch set up at home.

The Table

Take a look though your cupboards and look for tea cups & saucers, and small sharing side plates, we all have them stored away and mostly forgotten. I love to bring out these special pieces whenever possible to help create a setting that your guests, in this case Mom, will remember. Have one bowl for sugar, & one for creamer or milk. I have a beautiful dutch blue and white tea set that was given to me for my wedding that works perfectly. Are you setting up outside? Add a table cloth to underneath to elevate the experience. Bring out any small vases you have, and fill them with fresh flowers to complete the setting. Even a single stem from the garden will add a feminine touch to the table.

The Food

High tea menus are simple & pretty. You can visit your local bakery and pick up mini sized cakes & scones, or cut pastries in to quarters and arrange them on a plate in the centre. Adorn with some berries for colour. Make sure you also add a couple of savoury item - a simple one is herb & garlic cream cheese & finely sliced cucumber between white bread slices. Egg salad on white bread is also a classic. Cut the crusts and quarter to create finger sandwiches.

The Tea

You can find a variety of teas at any grocery store but serving her favourite is always a good idea. Earl grey tea is my favourite, it has a subtle floral taste that I love. But if your Mom is like me, serving mimosas is also always a good idea!

Want to make quick work of the above, check out the Grazing Studio and Cakes By Anjan who have savoury & sweet packages ready for local pickup. Click on the photo for a details.

From our family to yours, Happy Mother's Day.
